Curriculum Vitae
Wolfgang Trimmel has been a lecturer in Arabic language, literature and culture at the University of Basel’s Programme in Near and Middle Eastern Studies since spring 2022. Since December 2024, he has also been working on a research project funded by the University of Basel’s Research Fund for Junior Researchers, entitled “Narrating Iraqi History: Trauma and Collective Memory in Contemporary Iraqi Literature”.
He holds an MA in Arabic Studies and an MA in Global History from the University of Vienna. During his studies, he spent a semester abroad in France at Université Paris Diderot and INALCO (Paris) and carried out research at the French Diplomatic Archives in Nantes. He also studied Arabic in Rabat (Morocco) for six months.
In 2016, he began work on a PhD about self-translation in modern Arabic literature as a Junior Fellow at the IFK in Vienna. In the course of this fellowship, he spent time as a visiting researcher at Centre Jacques-Berque in Rabat (Morocco) and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (USA). In February 2023, he completed his PhD with distinction. From 2016 to 2022, he gained extensive experience teaching Arabic language and literature at the University of Vienna.
His main area of research concerns modern Arabic literature and culture in the 20th and 21st centuries, in particular trauma and collective memory in literature, translation and self-translation, as well as literary representations of war, conflict, and revolution.
