Workshop: Urban Transformations and Cultural Practices Letters to the Governor; Death, Mobility, and Claims of the City

BASEL, 7 December, 2017

Based on Sayed Aweys's two books: Cries of the Silents: the phenomenon of writing on vehicle structures in modern Egyptian society & One of the features of modern Egyptian society; the phenomenon of sending messages to the shrine of Imam Shafi'i, the workshop will try to explore two field sites where people work on the creation of new participatory spaces.

Konflikt und Kooperation auf der "Balkanroute" 
Der Flüchtlingstransit durch den Balkan und seine politischen und gesellschaftlichen Folgen

Die SUK-Doktoratskooperation Basel / Zürich (MUBIT) lädt zu einer Veranstaltung mit Dr. phil. Andreas Ernst (Korrespondent der Neuen Zürcher Zeitung für den Westbalkan) ein.

Die Wanderung Hunderttausender Flüchtlinge über den Balkan hat die betroffenen Staaten und Gesellschaften vor neuartige Herausforderungen gestellt. Wie gehen die Regierungen und wie die Bürger damit um? Wie wird die Wanderung logistisch bewerkstelligt und wie politisch verarbeitet? Welche legalen und illegalen Netzwerke unterstützen den Transit  - und wie organisieren sich die Flüchtlinge selber? Interessant sind aber auch die Folgen der “Flüchtlingskrise” für die Beziehungen zwischen der Anrainerstaaten und deren Verhältnis zur EU.

Geboren 1960 in Zürich. Studium der Geschichte in Zürich und Berlin. Lebt seit 1999 zuerst in Skopje dann in Belgrad. 2007 Nationalfonds-Projekt zum «State Building» in Kosovo seit 1999 (zusammen mit Prof. Nada Boskovska, Universität Zürich). 2012 Visiting Fellow Center for South-Eastern European Studies, Universität Graz. 2013 Journalistenpreis der Südost-Europa Gesellschaft (München). 2014 Istanbul-Reisestipendium der Landis und Gyr-Stiftung.

İmparatorluğun Hafızası: Osmanlı Arşivi

BASEL, 22 Nisan 2016

Osmanlı Arşivi’nde araştırma yapacak bir araştırmacının arşivden nasıl yararlanacağı, belge türleri, Osmanlı bürokrasisinin işleyişi ve Osmanlı Arşivi’nin tanıtımı bu seminerin temel konusudur. Seminerin birinci b.lümünde; Osmanlı’da Hazine-i Evrak olarak adlandırılan modern arşivin nasıl kurulduğu ve günümüzde nasıl işlediği ele alınacaktır. Araştırmacının arşiv belgesini değerlendirirken, belgenin türünü, hangi bürokratik işlemlerden geçtiğini ve Osmanlı bürokrasisinin nasıl işlediğini bilmesi oldukça önemlidir. Osmanlı bürokrasisinde yaşanan değişimin belgelere nasıl yansıdığı, örnek belge türleri üzerinden anlatılacaktır. Seminerin ikinci b.lümünde ise; Osmanlı Arşivi’nde bulunan defter ve belge tasniflerinin tanıtımı yapılarak, araştırmacının arşivde hangi fonlarla karşılaşabileceği üzerinde durulacaktır. Ayrıca Osmanlı Arşivi’nin dışında Türkiye’de bulunan diğer arşivlere de kısaca değinilecektir.

Prof. Dr. Fatmagül Demirel, lisans, master ve doktora eğitimini İstanbul Üniversitesi Edebiyat Fakültesi Tarih Bölümünde tamamladı. İstanbul Üniversitesi Edebiyat Fakültesi Arşivcilik bölümünde çalıştı. Halen Yıldız Teknik Üniversitesi, İnsan ve Toplum Bilimleri Bölümü’nde öğretim üyesi olarak çalışmaktadır. Uzmanlık alanı olan Osmanlı hukuk ve basın tarihi üzerine yayınlanmış kitap ve makaleleri bulunmaktadır.

From the Middle East to Northern Europe: Forced Migration, Asylum and Transnational Networks

An international workshop with Kamel Doraï organized by MUBIT Inter-University Doctoral Cooperation in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies Basel/Zurich & Middle Eastern Studies, The Graduate School of Social Sciences (G3S), University of Basel, Switzerland.
 

Based on two case studies, Palestinian and Iraqi refugees, this workshop proposes to analyse the role of networks in the migration process in the Middle East and towards Northern Europe and the way it contributes to the current theoretical debate in the field of forced migration studies.

Mithat Sancar ist Professor für Rechtswissenschaft an der Universität Ankara und Parlamentsabgeordneter der Demokratischen Partei der Völker (HDP). Er wird über das sehr aktuelle Thema: "Zeitgeschichtliche Weichenstellungen in der Türkei von 2015" sprechen.

A Modern World in Flux. Studying Migration, Refugees, and Settlement Regimes from the Middle East and Beyond

Die SUK-Doktoratskooperation Basel / Zürich lädt zu einem Workshop mit Prof. Dr. Isa Blumi (Georgia State Universitym Atlanta) ein.

Der zweitägige Workshop wird auf interdisziplinäre Weise die Folgen grosser Migrationsströme in der Moderne diskutieren, theoretisieren und historisieren. Dabei sind sowohl die Migrationsbewegungen von ImmigrantInnen und Geflüchteten wie auch die Reaktionen von Regierungen auf solche Migrationsbewegungen Gegenstand der Analyse. Diskutiert werden zudem die Folgen dieser Prozesse auf die globale Entwicklung.

Arab Nationalism: From Ottoman Empire to Colonial Mandates

BASEL, 11 - 12 September 2014

The 2nd Annual MUBIT Doctoral Workshop in Late- and Post-Ottoman Studies in Basel, "Arab Nationalism: From Ottoman Empire to Colonial Mandates", is a two-day intensive seminar (September 11-12, 2014) organized by Prof. Dr. Maurus Reinkowski, Dr. Selen Etingü, and Alp Yenen, M.A., Middle Eastern Studies, Department of Social Sciences at the University of Basel. Two leading scholars of Ottoman-Arab history will take over the instruction of the seminar: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hasan Kayalı and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Michael Provence, University of California, San Diego. The objective of the workshop is for participants to acquire advanced knowledge of the history and historiography of Ottoman-Arab nationalism.

Der frühe türkische Nationalismus und die Kizilbaş-Aleviten 

BASEL, 15. Mai 2014

Die SUK-Doktoratskooperation Basel / Zürich lädt zu einem Workshop mit Dr. Markus Dreßler (zurzeit wissenschaftlicher Assistent und Habilitand an der Universität Bayreuth (Religionswissenschaft)) ein.

Der Workshop wird sich (anhand einer Analyse der türkisch-nationalistischen Beschäftigung mit den Kızılbaş-Aleviten in der jungtürkischen und frühkemalistischen Periode) mit den politischen und diskursiven Hintergründen der Ambivalenz beschäftigen, welche die öffentliche Debatte über die religiösen und ethnischen Charakteristika der Kızılbaş-Aleviten bis heute prägt. Grundlage des Workshops und zugleich Teilnahmebedingung sind die Lektüre von zwei Kapiteln aus der Monographie von Markus Dreßler, Writing Religion: the Making of Turkish Alevi Islam (2013). Die Kopien werden allen Teilnehmenden elektronisch zur Verfügung gestellt.

The Politics and History of Implementing sharīʿa in Modern Egypt

SUK-Doktoratskooperation Islamwissenschaft (MUBIT) invites you to a workshop with Prof. Dr. Khaled Fahmy (Department of History, The American University in Cairo).

The topic to be discussed in this workshop is The Politics and History of Implementing sharīʿa in Modern Egypt. Based on Professor Fahmy’s research in the Egyptian National Archives (ENA) on the history of siyāsa in nineteenth century Egypt, he has realised siyāsa playing an integral role in sharīʿa. The workshop will reflect on the results of this research in what turned out to be nothing less than an entire archive of the siyāsa system that existed in Egypt during the nineteenth century.
