Guest Talk by Ran Greenstein "Between Colonialism and Apartheid", 19, March

BETWEEN COLONIALISM & APARTHEID: SOCIAL THEORY AND POLITICAL PRACTICE IN SOUTH AFRICA & ISRAEL/PALESTINE Prof. Ran Greenstein, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg

Part of the “Namibia and Southern African Studies Research Colloquium”, jointly organised by UNAM, BAB, ZASB & Middle Eastern Studies.

This talk addresses theoretical approaches to the history of conflict in South Africa and Israel/Palestine with a focus on notions such as colonialism of a special type, apartheid, ethnocracy, and settler colonialism. It will evaluate the merits of different perspectives both in the ways they deal with relations between theoretical variables (class, race, power, ideology) and in their implications for political practices of domination and resistance. It argues that no single concept can capture the dynamics of social relations in theses societies and therefore we need to combine various elements in a way that accounts for both historical continuity and social change.
