The Malouf of Constantine: Between Intercommunal Coexistence and, Anticolonial Struggles (1940–1962)

This research explores the role of malouf—a classical Arabo-Andalusian musical tradition—in shaping intercommunal relations and cultural identity in Constantine during the late colonial period. By analyzing historical archives, oral histories, and musical performances, this study examines how malouf functioned both as a medium of shared heritage and as a site of social and political negotiation. Crucially, this research considers the ways in which colonial displacement, independence, and migration disrupted the trajectories of individuals, communities, and their cultural traditions. Situated within broader discussions on cultural memory, decolonization, and postcolonial belonging, this project treats malouf not only as a musical tradition but as a historical witness to ruptures and reconfigurations of communal life.
