Silvia Naef ist Arabistin und Kulturhistorikerin. Sie ist spezialisiert auf moderne Kunst in der arabischen Welt (19.-21. Jh.) und hat sich auch mit der Frage des Bilderverbots im Islam beschäftig. Seit ihrer Promotion an der Universität Genf 1993 hat sie über diese Themen geforscht und gelehrt und Publikationen in mehreren Sprachen dazu veröffentlicht. Ihr Buch A la recherche d’une modernité arabe, L’évolution des arts plastiques en Egypte, au Liban et en Irak (1996) wurde 2008 auf Arabisch übersetzt. Eine überarbeitete französische Fassung sowie eine englische Übersetzung sind in Vorbereitung. Auf Deutsch ist Bilder und Bilderverbot im Islam (C.H. Beck, 2007) erschienen. Sie ist Mitglied der Forschungsgruppe ARVIMM (Groupe de recherche sur les Arts Visuels du Maghreb et du Moyen-Orient, 19e-21e siècle), mit welcher sie seit 2013 ein hybrides Seminar zu diesen Themen organisiert, und Gründungsmitglied von Manazir, Platform for the Study of Visual Arts, Architecture and Heritage in the MENA Region. Zwischen 2013-2017 leitete sie das SNF-Sinergia-Projekt, Other Modernities: Patrimony and Practices of Visual Expression Outside the West, in Zusammenarbeit mit Prof. Irene Maffi (Universität Lausanne) et Prof. Wendy Shaw (Freie Universität Berlin). Aktuell arbeitet sie an einem Buchprojekt über Schenkungen moderner Kunst und Replikate antiker Artefakte durch MENA-Staaten an internationale Organisationen.

Bevor sie 2000 ihren Ruf an die Universität Genf erhielt, unterrichtete sie in Tübingen und Basel. 2006 wurde sie zur Ordinaria promoviert und 2024 emeritiert. Sie war Gastprofessorin in Toronto (2007-2009), in Sassari (2012), an der Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris (2016), an der Université Saint-Joseph in Beirut (2017, 2022-23, 2024) und an der Sorbonne Abu Dhabi (2025), sowie Gastforscherin in Göttingen (2013) und Princeton (2003). Seit 2024 ist sie assozierte Forscherin am CERDAP (Centre d'Etudes et de Recherche sur la Diplomatie, l'Administration Publique et le Politique), Université de Grenoble Alpes.
